It is truly a level 1 book & all the words are able to be sounded out. I highly recommend this book to other beginning readers. This book is the first book that my son ever read on his own & it will forever be in my memories. It is a great book for a beginner, has 2 "chapters" so kids feel like they read a big-kid book, and it teaches a lesson about kindness.
Many books for beginning readers lack substance and can make reading boring. It is a story for which the expression 'sure to delight young and old alike' truly fits. You can't go wrong in choosing this one. This gem of a book is my favorite at this level in the Step-Into-Reading series. With simple wording -- perfect for a preschooler or a child learning to read -- The Lion and the Mouse, captures the main elements of the traditional fable. However, this meaningful story gives children an opportunity to not only be successful in reading, but to experience the joy of reading.
Then as fate would have it, one day the mouse does get to return the favor when he frees the lion from a hunter's net. And though it was written with children who are just beginning to read in mind, it would be suitable for younger children -- babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and some kindergärtners-- as well. The lion finds this humorous, but lets the mouse go. The publisher notes that their Step 1 readers are "[F]or children who know the alphabet and are eager to begin reading." The mouse begs to be let go, promising that one day he will return the favor. Very nice artwork: the color runs from page edge to page edge.

It is a pretty nice book for little children Overall it is probaly a good book for pretty young children. this book was okay I thought it was a little better than most of the other treasury of classics for children. I think this book would be pretty good for little children that think they are verry little and are dont really think of thamself really like they are verry emportant even thought every child is loved and emportant. I liked it for a little bet wen I was pretty small.
